A customer refers a friend on Monday. By Friday the friend has bought, and the referrer is still waiting on a reward that someone has to approve, convert and send.
Most referral programs lose people at that last step, not at the invite. The tool that tracks the referral is often not the tool that pays it, and the gap between them is where rewards go late, go to the wrong person or go out twice.
The payout is worth getting right. In a Journal of Marketing study, referred bank customers were worth 16% more over six years than similar customers acquired another way.
We compared 10 tools by what each does once a referral qualifies: delivering a gift card or wallet reward, moving cash, or running the referral program itself. Match the tool to the job you need done, not to the category name on its homepage.
Disclosure: Xoxoday publishes this guide and Plum is one of the 10. All are judged on the same criteria.

What Makes the Best Referral Reward Payout Tool?
A referral program earns its value after the reward lands. The payout step needs the same care as the invite, and the research below shows why.
16%
Higher lifetime value
referred customers vs similar non-referred customers, over six years
18%
Lower churn
referred customers leave more slowly than other customers
60%
ROI over six years
on a EUR 25 referral reward in the study's bank data
Source: Schmitt, Skiera and Van den Bulte, "Referral Programs and Customer Value," Journal of Marketing, 2011 (one bank's customer data, so directional).
We judged every tool on five tests:
- Reward format range. Can the referrer take a gift card, a wallet payment, a prepaid card or cash, or only one of them?
- Fraud and abuse controls. Look for duplicate-referral detection, self-referral checks and limits before a reward is sent.
- Trigger and integration depth. A verified signup or purchase should fire the reward with no manual step.
- Global reach and compliance. Check country coverage, currencies and tax-form handling for the markets your referrers live in.
- Reporting. Marketing and finance both need reward status and spend by campaign.
We weighted fraud controls and triggers most, because referral budgets leak at those two points once volume grows. Only some tools here track referrals. Referral platforms run the program, payout providers move the money, and reward delivery tools sit in between. Feature claims come from each vendor's public pages, written in our own words. Ratings come from G2 and Capterra as of October 2026 and change over time. Where a score rests on fewer than 20 reviews, we show the count.

1. Xoxoday Plum
Role: Reward delivery. Plum pays a referral reward the moment a verified action happens. A signup, purchase or activation in your referral tool or CRM triggers the reward through the API, so nobody approves payouts by hand. The referrer receives a digital code or link and picks from brand gift cards, prepaid cards or wallet payouts, drawn from a catalog of 10M+ reward options across 150+ countries.
Fraud controls sit inside the rule engine: duplicate-referral detection, self-referral checks and referral limits. Reward budgets leak most at those checks. Plum pays the reward rather than running the referral mechanic itself, so most teams pair it with a referral tool or with their own CRM logic. Pairing is common.
- Rewards fire automatically on verified signups, purchases or activations
- Referrer chooses gift card, prepaid card or wallet payout
- Duplicate, self-referral and limit checks before any reward is sent
- Pays the reward but does not track referral links, so it needs a referral tool or CRM upstream
2. Giftogram
Role: Reward delivery. One send, three formats. Giftogram bundles digital gift cards, virtual or physical prepaid Visa and Mastercard, and cash through PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or ACH. A team can send in bulk, brand the delivery with its own logo and colors, and track spend against a budget.
The company says its catalog covers 140,000+ gift card brands and that 22,000+ companies use it. It connects through an API, Zapier workflows and native HR and CRM integrations. Public pages describe sending and reporting, not referral tracking or claim validation.
- Cash, prepaid and gift card options in the same send
- Logo and color branding on every delivery
- API and Zapier workflows for automated sends
- Sends the reward only, so referral tracking and validation sit in another system
3. eGifter
Role: Reward delivery. eGifter delivers digital gift cards and reward cards by email or text. Teams can send one at a time, upload a spreadsheet, order in bulk or call a real-time API, which covers both a one-off referral thank-you and an automated program.
The Choice Card lets a recipient pick their own retailer, and the Local Choice Card reaches 100,000+ local merchants. A Salesforce app on AppExchange and a SurveyMonkey integration are listed on its site. Catalog depth depends on account tier, and the company says larger orders unlock 3,000+ international brands. Ask which tier you would be on.
- Recipient picks the retailer through a Choice Card
- Salesforce app and a real-time API
- Individual, spreadsheet and bulk sending
- Catalog depth varies by account tier, so confirm the brands you need are in yours
4. Dots
Role: Cash payouts. Dots is a payout platform built for people who are not employees: contractors, creators and referral partners. It lists 300+ payment rails across 190+ countries, including bank transfers, mobile money and wallets such as PayPal, Venmo and Cash App.
Cash brings paperwork. Two modules handle it. Dots Onboard collects payee details with identity verification and sanctions screening, and Dots Tax collects W-9, W-8BEN and T4A forms and files in the US and Canada. A team can start in a dashboard, use payout links, or embed the flow in its own app.
- Wide rail coverage, from bank transfers to mobile money
- Identity checks and tax-form collection built into onboarding
- Dashboard, embed or white-labeled wallet, depending on your team
- Public pages cover cash payouts and compliance, not a gift card catalog or referral tracking
5. PayPal Payouts
Role: Cash payouts. PayPal Payouts sends money to many recipients at once using an email address, phone number, PayPal ID or Venmo handle. A team uploads a CSV or calls the Payouts API, and funds usually land within minutes, though PayPal says it can take up to 24 hours. Setup takes little.
PayPal lists payouts to recipients in 96 countries and 24 currencies, with up to 15,000 payments per API request and 10,000 per file upload. Recipients are not charged to receive. Public pages show PayPal and Venmo as the destinations, with no gift card or bank-card option.
- Pay by email, phone number, PayPal ID or Venmo handle
- CSV upload or API, with batch sizes in the thousands
- Recipients pay nothing to receive
- Rewards land in PayPal or Venmo accounts only, so there is no gift card or bank option
6. Tipalti
Role: Cash payouts. Tipalti is a finance automation suite, and referral payouts sit inside its Mass Payments product. Mass Payments lists payouts across 200+ countries, 120 currencies and 50+ payment methods, with tax compliance and payment fraud detection.
It is finance software first. The wider suite covers accounts payable, procurement, expenses and cards, and it syncs with ERPs including NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, Sage and Microsoft Dynamics. The depth suits a company where finance owns partner payments end to end, and it is more than a team needs to pay a few hundred referrers.
- Payouts, tax compliance and ERP sync in one finance system
- Wide currency and payment method range
- Multi-entity support for companies with several billing entities
- More than a referral program needs if payables automation is not already on your roadmap
7. Payoneer
Role: Cash payouts. Payoneer's Mass Payouts product sends up to 1,000 payments in a single batch. It lists payouts across 190+ countries and territories in 70+ currencies, with tax and compliance controls built into the flow.
The compliance layer covers AML and KYC checks, 24/7 global risk monitoring and licensing in several jurisdictions. It is aimed at marketplaces, vendors and contractors, so the fit is strongest for partner programs where recipients are businesses or freelancers who already hold Payoneer accounts. Check recipient fit first.
- Batches of up to 1,000 payments
- Local payout methods in 190+ countries and territories
- AML and KYC checks built in
- Built for marketplace and vendor payouts, so consumer referral programs need another reward layer
8. ReferralCandy
Role: Referral platform. ReferralCandy is referral and affiliate software for ecommerce stores, with native placement on a Shopify storefront, checkout and account page. A store can reward discounts, store credit, cash commissions or gift cards, in structures such as "Give $10, Get $10" or a percentage commission.
An AI agent named REx reads store data, drafts a program and suggests reward tests, and waits for merchant approval before changing anything. Merchants stay in control. The platform handles referral emails, fraud checks and reward payouts, and connects to WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend and PayPal. The company says about 2,000 brands use it.
- Referral, affiliate and loyalty programs in one ecommerce tool
- Four reward types: discounts, store credit, cash and gift cards
- Fraud checks and automated payouts included
- Built around ecommerce storefronts, so B2B and app-based programs need heavier setup
9. Friendbuy
Role: Referral platform. Friendbuy covers three programs on one platform: referral, loyalty and influencer or creator marketing. The creator side adds tiered commissions, revenue-based attribution and automated payouts, so one system can pay a customer referrer and a creator by different rules. One system, two kinds of payee.
Event-level integrations with Shopify, Klaviyo, Attentive, Braze, Recharge, Segment, Salesforce and Stripe let referral data trigger marketing flows. Named features include an analytics dashboard, AI recommendations, incentive optimization and fraud prevention. It also offers AI agent access through MCP.
- Referral, loyalty and creator programs share one data set
- Tiered creator commissions with automated payouts
- Event-level integrations with marketing and subscription tools
- A full program platform, so more setup than a team needs if it only wants to pay rewards
10. Extole
Role: Referral platform. Extole is an enterprise offer management platform. It runs refer-a-friend, ambassador, friends-and-family, reward-for-action and welcome-offer programs side by side, so a brand can test several mechanics at once under one set of rules. Scale is the point.
Flow Builder configures programs without code, and rewards can go out as gift cards, coupons, points or account credits. For engineering teams it offers REST APIs, SDKs for iOS, Android, JavaScript and React Native, and webhooks. Extole lists ISO/IEC 27001 certification and GDPR and CCPA compliance, plus multi-brand and multi-market support.
- Several referral mechanics managed under one platform
- No-code Flow Builder plus APIs, SDKs and webhooks
- Multi-brand and multi-market setup for large enterprises
- Enterprise scope, so a small team with one referral offer may find it more than it needs
What to Ask Before You Switch Platforms
Demos make every tool look the same. These four questions separate the real differences.
- Who tracks the referral, and who pays the reward? Many programs need two vendors, so ask how a verified referral passes from one to the other.
- What stops a self-referral or a duplicate? Ask to see the rule, the limit and the audit trail, not a feature name.
- Which reward formats reach our referrers? Get a list for your top five countries, not a global claim.
- What does finance see? Confirm reward status, spend by campaign and tax-form handling are available without an export request.
Which Referral Reward Payout Tool Should You Choose?
If you already track referrals and need to deliver gift card, prepaid or wallet rewards worldwide, start with Plum, Giftogram or eGifter. If referrers want cash and you need tax handling, compare Dots, PayPal Payouts, Tipalti and Payoneer. If you need the referral mechanic itself, look at ReferralCandy, Friendbuy or Extole, then check how each one pays out.

Frequently asked questions
A referral reward payout tool delivers the reward after a referral qualifies, whether that is a gift card, a wallet payment, a prepaid card or cash. Some tools only pay, while referral platforms also track links and validate referrals.
Cash is the most flexible but needs bank or wallet details and often tax forms. Gift cards and wallet rewards arrive faster and need no bank account, and a platform such as Xoxoday Plum lets the referrer choose.
Often yes. A referral platform or your own CRM tracks and validates the referral, and a payout tool delivers the reward through an API. Some referral platforms bundle basic payouts, so check which reward types they support.
Check for duplicate and self-referrals, cap rewards per referrer and send the reward only after a verified action such as a purchase or activation. Reviewing unusual referral patterns before large payouts adds a second layer.
In the US, cash and gift card rewards can count as income to the recipient, and the payer may need to collect a W-9 and file a Form 1099 above IRS thresholds. Rules differ by country, so confirm with a tax advisor.
